We all swing the club the way we think is correct. If we have received incorrect information and or incomplete information the learning process will take longer. I can make a great argument that over the years that much of the correct info has been ravaged from it’s truth.

Never before in golf history have golfers had access to so much golf instruction (and a lot of it is free). Ironically, never before in golf history have golfers been so confused about how to swing a golf club. It is actually sad for those who really care. For those who golf just for the heck of it, I guess all of this free online stuff is great. For those who are more serious about their games, it must be a nightmare.

Everyone has an opinion; everyone is trying to pass along a quick fix; slow motion cameras and launch monitors have us so mesmerised that we have lost our ability to understand and feel.

Unfortunately the masses love this stuff, and the masses rule. The poor minority who are serious golfers are being almost completely ignored. The word out there is that there is no money to be made marketing to you because there are not enough of you to worry about. The word out there is it is a waste of time and money if an instructor wants to try and solve putting. It seems as if the golf world would rather bitch about their putting and short game but they will not pay to improve it, except to maybe buy a new putter. This totally blows my mind. I could never figure out how more expensive putters move on a better line than less expensive ones.

I just saw while watching this weeks Tour Event a new space-age balanced putter. Please tell me….if graphite is better, if balance in the putter was that important, wouldn’t all the tour players be using that technology? I’m certain that most of them can afford the product. I heard that Pat Perez just bought an old putter using old technology. Keep in mind that these tour players seldom need to buy anything. What happened to titanium? I thought it was a miracle metal that instantly made a ball go farther (even though they contained only a minute amount in each club).

I guess my question to you is, are we all so naive that we keep falling for these deceptions or do we just not want to put in some smart time to improve our skills? I think conservatively that you getting better is 5% equipment 95% you.

It is important to understand that the speed at which you achieve positive results directly relates to the accurateness of the information you are using. If the information is wrong, which is usually the case (because important pieces are left out in order to ‘make it simple’), never getting it is definitely in the equation.

Hope you keep coming back to my site. I will not ‘dumb-down’ any of my content. I will leave the masses to the other 1000 instructors on the web.

Bottom Line. You swing the club using the best information you have at the time. The only true way to improve is to change the information. For those of you who care, find an instructor you believe in and get on a plan. STOP trying to put tips together from several different sources.

Correct mechanics are wonderful. Incorrect ones are terrible. It is NOT true that you need to get worse before you get better.

As Moe Norman used to say, ”Try Smarter not Harder”.

                                                                                 www.lagandload.com

As an instructor certain lessons come to me and I then find myself compelled to figure a way to get that perticular problem solved. At this point in time I am deeply devoted to fixing putting. To start with, I do not hear too many golfers raving about how they have vastly improved because they have bought the newest, latest, greatest putting training device. I do hear most golfers saying, ‘I had it and then lost it’. Golfers are never going to get it and keep it while they buy into the illusion that all that is required to be a good putter is a good stroke. If we could just all accept the fact that what is needed is a series of requirements that add up to create the wanted end result:

#1 The correct grip pressure
#2 A good stroke
#3 Proper alignment
#4 Speed Control
#5 A History of making putts

Give me a couple of weeks. I will put together a practice putting tape that will get you thinking.

I will keep you updated.
Mark

I’ve been doing a lot of Tiger and Sean Foley reading lately. It seems that Mr Foley goes from hero to villain quite often these days. I like to consider Sean a friend. I have always backed him and his knowledge of the motion required to make a golf ball do what you want it to. However, taking the worlds best player and getting him to win again should not be considered his biggest accomplishment. What he has done with Justin Rose and Hunter Mahan IS worth discussing and giving credit to. Hell, applauding him for helping Tiger win again is like applauding Rembrant for completing a paint by numbers kit.

No chance it takes 2 years. Check out Tigers stats. They are pretty darn good. It would be bad business on the part of ‘Team Tiger’ if word got out that he just does not have what he used to. How many hours per day do you think ‘Team Tiger’ sits in a room and tries to figure out what story they want to tell us?

Every golf instructor on the planet should be worried. If it takes Tiger 2 years and hitting hundreds of thousands of balls to change a pattern, then what chance do you or I have?
I have been saying for well over a year now that Sean Foley knows his stuff. The flat out truth is that Tiger does not beleive in Tiger on the same level as he once did. Oh sure, even a broken clock is correct twice a day – Tiger will win again but never like he used to. He is starting to see his misses. He never noticed those before.

Technique does not equal great contact.

Thanks to new technology, the internet, and YouTube I will be starting a series of myths & truths. We must get away from thinking that good technique equals good contact. With that out of the way, we can got to the truth, which will then lead to better scores. It is amazing how few golfers actually understand what the correct impact alignments are. Too many players are still trying to hit the ball with a clubface hitting the direct back of the ball with it square to the target line.

With that picture in your mind, lessons will help very little.

I suggest that the next time you take a lesson, start by asking the pro what correct impact alignments are.

We are starting to get a lot of action on the LagnLoad website and YouTube channel. I am happy to say that the majority of questions and responses we receive are insightful and very well thought out.

I always enjoy a respectful debate and believe there are not many things better than a great question.

I have been around this game for over 45 years, I have won many professional events and have taught at the highest level. With that said, I would like to pose a couple questions as well as express a couple of opinions.

#1. After all of this time, I can not say that I have seen much evidence that would suggest that the more you practice the better you get. What I believe I can safely say is that golfers tend to improve for about the first 3 years after taking up the game.

#2 Why doesn’t Hank Haney use the ‘Medicus’ or his new swing plane device that he has endorsed on his TV show? Some of his students could sure use them.

#3 If you do not understand that the club face and the club shaft are two different entities you are going to have a hard time improving.

#4 If you’re waiting for someone to make golf instruction simple, you are in for a long wait. Instead you should be looking for organized and correct information.

There is much to learn, but if taught correctly it is possible to put a piece in place so that it never breaks again. That will allow you to move on to the next piece and do the same thing. This method may not be the fastest way to go but it is better and faster than trying to put everything together at once and never getting it.

Always interested in hearing your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Mark

What does hitting it better have to do with scoring?

Nothing! I first heard the term ‘comfort zone’ from The Legendary Moe Norman. He would say golfers shoot what they think they deserve and that scoring has little to do with how well they hit it.

Not many of us want to admit that we get scared of shooting scores better than we have in the past. Take for example a player who usually shoots 90, is having a great day and shoots 40 on the front nine. I would argue that it is extremely likely that this golfer is going to shoot 50 or higher on the back nine. Rather than admitting this was a result of being scared, this golfer will probably tell his fellow golfers that he ‘lost his swing’ on the back nine.

Over the next year I intend to take a serious run at teaching golfers to face their fears and focus on learning to lower their handicaps by using a combination of smart golf swing practice and techniques of how to face their fears.

Hope you stay with me.
